| The novel "War of the Worlds" written by Herbert George Wales is one of the most famous works of the science fiction genre. What it seems as a naive story from today's perspective, it landed a huge impact on humanity in the time it was written (last century), greater than any succeeding story ever would. All due to a certain radio drama which caused havoc among people because they actually believed that they were listening to live news, and that the invasion of the Martians have began! Steven Spielberg is renowned, among other things, by the ability to take on himself the realization of grand projects, spectacular movies, and one has to admit that he's very successful in doing just that. | Clearly, it was expected of him to deliver big time, given the background of this story. And he really did! The story was, since it was made by Hollywood, shifted into the present time, and from the grassy hills of England moved to the New Continent. Although changed considerably in details, and completely in characters, the guiding spirit of the novel remained untouched, somehow, and that was facing people with imminent disaster, their reactions to it and a resistance inspite of all. The plot unfolds very slowly before our eyes in the beginning. We meet Ray Ferrier, divorced construction worker from the suburbs of a big city in the east coast of the USA. He takes into custody for the weekend his children, young Rachel (Dakota Fanning, also starred in |

| Hide and Seek) and a teenager Robbie (Justin Chatwin). Reviewing of a dysfunctional, one may say typical American family today, was soon to be interrupted very harshly, and in a most unusual way, by the invasion of huge tripods, doom's day machines, alien in origin, but who came beneath our very feet, where they have been put to rest from the dawn of time! Dreaded machines are indestructible, protected by an invisible energy shields, which proved to be beyond power of our strongest arms (both conventional and nuclear!). The disaster is imminent... The main part of the movie describes the struggle of a common man to keep his family safe where death lurks behind every corner. It is obvious that the director was very skillful in creating the suspense, | meaning that you'll be grabbing your seats frequently and feel slight nosiness in your stomach, which many find to be very unpleasant sensation.
